PROGRAM LEADERS:
Pat Quade '65, Professor Emeritus of Theater
Kathy Quade, Retired Disability Services Coordinator
Over the years, many people have accompanied Pat and Kathy Quade on Theater in London. Here is what some of them had to say:
- "I absolutely LOVED London! We saw a variety of plays and fantastic acting. It was interesting to see many theaters; all different and appropriate to each performance."
- "Lectures, preparation and discussions made each play come alive."
- "Pat is a talented instructor and facilitator. The discussions were deeply thought provoking."
- "Pat and Kathy are enthusiastic leaders and gracious hosts."
- "Hopping the Tube to travel all over London was great."
Now it is your turn to participate in this exceptional experience! Attend performances at The Royal Shakespeare in both
London and possibly Stratford-upon-Avon, The Royal National’s three theaters and the Royal Court theaters as well as
other distinctive venues, tour the backstage of the Globe Theatre, and meet with one of London’s premier theater critics.
We anticipate attending eight or nine performances. Final selections will depend on productions offered and timing of the
performances.
In addition to experiencing some of London’s favorite cultural treasures, we’ll consider an excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon to attend a matinee and/or evening performance. The Royal Shakespeare Company will have finished a complete renovation of the main theater space in Stratford and we will be among the first to visit the new venue.
This program routinely sells out so we encourage you to register early!
Discover London
London is the theater capital of the world. The number and variety of productions and the standards of acting and
directing are unrivaled. The London stage accommodates both the traditional and avant-garde, the commercial and the
experimental. Few activities in London are as entertaining and rewarding as the theater.
London is one of the most fascinating places on earth...and a mass of contradictions. It’s a decidedly royal city, studded
with palaces, court gardens, coats of arms and other regal paraphernalia. Yet it is also the home of the world's second oldest
parliamentary democracy. (Iceland was the first.) What’s amazing is that this city - ancient and modern,
sprawling and compact, stolidly English and increasingly multicultural - works as well as it does.
We will explore the city on foot and by public transportation, navigating around the city as Londoners do.

Program Leaders
Pat and Kathy Quade are veteran travelers and program leaders. Pat led his first Study Travel program, “London for Theater Lovers,” in 1995 and has led “Theater in London” January Interim courses for students 10 times. Kathy has joined him in leading students on Term in the Middle East and Global Semester. They have led Study Travel programs for adults in more than 10 countries, and always have plans for future programs.
Pat graduated from St. Olaf in 1965 and taught in the theater department from 1968 to 1996. In addition to teaching and directing plays, he served from 1996 to 2004 as director of International and Off-Campus Studies, which annually sends over 800 students abroad on more than 35 Interim courses and 60 semester- or year-long programs. Kathy graduated from UW-Madison and was disabilities services coordinator at St. Olaf prior to her retirement in 2004. Kathy and Pat recently spent a year working at United International College in Zhuhai, China, where Kathy taught English and Pat served as the Chief of International Development.
What to Expect
Except for possible excursion days, our schedule starts with breakfast and a seminar/discussion at the hotel. Most afternoons will be free so that you can explore London on your own, relax before the evening’s performance or join Pat and Kathy to visit some of London’s cultural sites. We will attend nightly performances (except Sunday) plus a matinee on one or two days. This schedule can be vigorous, depending on how you use your free time.
We’re staying at a different hotel from previous programs! Accommodations are in standard rooms at the Copthorne Tara, a large tourist class hotel near Hyde Park with 24-hour guest services. Standard rooms come equipped with satellite tv, high speed internet (for an extra charge), radio, alarm clock, ironing board and iron, refrigerator, tea and coffee maker, and hair dryer. The closest Tube stop is High Street Kensington, about two blocks away.
London is best experienced on foot. Be prepared for lots of walking! We will take the subway or bus to and from matinee and evening performances, restaurants and other sites around town. This can include walking several blocks to the Tube stop, walking down and up one or more flights of stairs in the subway station, and walking several blocks to the final destination. Some of the theaters are old and require walking up narrow stairs to our seats. Comfortable shoes trump the latest fashion! We will provide precise timing and addresses in the final itinerary so that you may take taxis (at your own expense) if you prefer.
Airport transfers and possible day excursions outside the city will be made by private coach. You will need to manage your own luggage through the airport.
You should be able to walk up to five miles per day over possibly uneven terrain (e.g. cobblestones or aged sidewalks), climb stairs that may not have handrails, keep pace with an active group of travelers, deal with the emotional highs and lows that can occur when experiencing a different culture, and be a considerate member of the group (prompt, courteous and flexible).
Temperatures in early May range from highs in the mid-60s Fahrenheit to lows in the mid-40s. Rainfall that month averages just less than two inches.
