Identify Companies And Organizations Of Interest To You:
Researching the company/organization is like studying prior to an exam; make time for this important step.
- Attend the information session scheduled by the recruiting organization to learn about the company as a whole and the specific positions offered. You can get a list of information sessions offered on campus through OleRecruiting: Calendar ~ Calendar Search ~ Event Type ~ Information Session with Presentation ~ Search.
- Visit company web sites to get a broad view of each organization and its primary business. The CEL also has some materials available from recruiting organizations.
To interview on campus, you must submit a resume via OleRecruiting for each company/organization with which you'd like an interview.
- Take a critical look at your resume and revise it with your specific goals in mind. You may need more than one version of your resume to present yourself most effectively for varying opportunities. Note: For purposes of interviewing on campus, you should include your GPA on your resume.
- If you're just getting started, use the CEL's on-line resume guide to help you write a first draft; then come to the Center for Experiential Learning to have a peer advisor review your resume.
- When you have a final draft of your resume, make an appointment with a CEL counselor to get feedback from a professional.
To make a great impression when you interview, you'll need to take time to prepare for your interviews by practicing answers to common interview questions. An interview is like a final exam; you want to "A"ce the interview!
- Read through the CEL's online interviewing guide for detailed information on preparing for an interview. Think through answers to commonly posed questions. Prepare a benefit statement as a way of introducing yourself to a recruiter and answering the first and most basic interview question: "Tell me about yourself."
- Attend an Interviewing Skills Workshop. Workshops are offered several times this fall: Dates To Be Determined!
- Check out one of the books on interview skills from the CEL Resource Library. Each offers great ideas on how best to answer those tough interview questions.
- Watch an interviewing video - available at the CEL.
- Schedule a practice interview with a CEL staff member. To get the maximum benefit from your practice interview, prepare by attending a workshop or viewing a video and formulating your answers to common interview questions.
- Once you are feeling confident of your interview skills, schedule a video-taped practice interview with one of the CEL counselors. This final step is a great way to polish your interview skills.
The entire process of applying for an interview and scheduling that interview is done through OleRecruiting. Watch the deadlines posted by each organization, and make sure that you submit all documents required by the organization to be considered as a candidate.
Some recruiters prefer pre-select interviews while others want an open interview schedule.
- Pre-selects are interview situations where the recruiter selects those students to be interviewed. A pre-select interview schedule assures that the recruiter's time is being spent with candidates who meet the employer's requirements. While you indicate your desire to interview with any employer coming on campus, you may or may not be selected for interviews in pre-select situations. If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified via email that you should sign up for an interview time through OleRecruiting.
- With open interviewing schedules, you will be interviewed if you have signed up in one of the available time slots. If a schedule is open, you should select an interview time when you submit your resume in OleRecruiting.
