INTERNATIONAL AND OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAMS WITH INTERNSHIP COMPONENTS
Students interested in interning off campus should consider participating in one of many off-campus study programs endorsed by the college which integrate internships/experiential learning. Listed below are a variety of summer and semester-long off-campus programs with strong internship components. These programs take students to interesting destinations both nationally and abroad!
ACM: Associated Colleges of the Midwest
Mexico Summer Program
Service Learning and Language Immersion in Mexico City. ACM program offers home-stays with local families, cultural field trips, and intensive language study at Universidad La Salle.
India Summer Program
Service Learning with a Non-Governmental Organization and Cultural Immersion in the city of Pune in India. ACM program offers home-stays with local families, cultural field trips throughout both rural and urban districts, and intensive Marathi language study.
Chicago Semester Long Program (Fall or Spring)
All students participate in core coursework, in-depth seminars, internship experience, and independent study projects. Program open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Three core program focuses include Business, Entrepreneurship & Society, Chicago Arts & Urban Studies.
Washington Internship Institute - Spring, Summer & Fall Internships
Capital Experience
Attend Congressional hearings. Write press releases. Develop marketing plans. Participate in meetings. Plan events. Perform scientific experiments. As a WII intern, you become an active member of the office staff with real responsibilities. You can expect to fully participate in office life, attending meetings and special events, performing research, writing reports, preparing briefings, etc.
Embassy Scholars
Recent placements include an international development internship at the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs, a policy internship at the State Department NATO office, and internships at the Embassy of Mexico and Embassy of France. Although many internships are with international organizations, all students intern in Washington, DC.
Go Green Internship
Students will gain exposure to the policies, people, and institutions that shape federal environmental decision making. All classes are taught by established faculty who have earned their doctorate degree, taught at the college level, and held faculty rank. Classes will examine how U.S. environmental policy is really made with special attention to the international community and global concerns. $1500 scholarships will be awarded to students attending the Summer or Fall 2009 terms. Five awards will be distributed each term to exceptional students who have a passion for the environment.
Faculty Fellows
For four days each week, Faculty Fellows work in a challenging professional environment, such as a government agency, nonprofit organization, national association, museum, foundation, or other site. One day each week, Fellows participate in a seminar designed for participants to assess their field-based learning and connect it to issues on their campuses and in their disciplines.

Students interested in participating in a Washington Center program need to register for St. Olaf Academic Internship Credit in order to receive credit on their St. Olaf transcript. HECUA: Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs
Bangladesh: Development and Community - January Term Program
Students will hear from development theorists and development practitioners. They will talk to the intended beneficiaries of development programs. Through theoretical inquiry and structured experiential learning, students will be presented with conceptual tools to compare and contrast the local understanding of "development" and social change used by the materially poor rural and urban Bangladeshis with the development discourses of experts and the urban elite.
The program explores the relationship between the EU and globalization and in particular questions whether the EU adequately addresses the human dimensions of globalization.
Ecuador: Community Internships in Latin America (CILA) – Semester Long Program
This program offers students the opportunity to learn first-hand about social problems in Ecuadorian society and to explore ways in which various community groups attempt to address them. Students immerse themselves in the daily life of Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, by combining an internship designed to reflect their personal interests and learning goals with a seminar, an independent project and a home stay.
Northern Ireland: Democracy and Social Change -
Spring Semester Program
Students examine the historical, political and religious roots of the conflict in Northern Ireland, the prospects for peace and the progress being made. Through readings, lectures, discussions, internships, group study projects and field experiences this program invites interaction with people involved in social change.
Scandinavian: Urban Studies Term -
Fall Semester Program
Whether students intend to deepen knowledge about their own self identity / ethnicity or learn more about a welfare state, this program will provide a deep understanding of contemporary Scandinavia as a complex, progressive society with arguably the most comprehensive systems of social protection in the world.
