The interdisciplinary concentration in Middle Eastern studies is ideal for students with an interest in the Middle East who are majoring in economics, history, political science, religion, or sociology, among other areas, or who have participated in St. Olaf study abroad programs. The interdisciplinary concentration allows students to combine courses from various departments by crafting a five-course concentration.  Students may include Independent Study/Independent Research courses as well as courses taken through relevant off-campus programs; at least one course must be completed on campus.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities to study in the Middle East through St. Olaf international programs, including: Global Semester, Term in the Middle East, and Semester at Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey), or Semester at American University in Cairo (Cairo, Egypt).

Courses taken abroad should be certified by the director of the Middle East Studies Concentration as fulfilling the appropriate course requirements. Students who wish to count off-campus courses toward a major or concentration should seek approval from the chair of the relevant department before beginning their programs. Some restrictions apply.

The following courses, offered on campus during the 2011-2012 school year, all count towards the Middle Eastern Studies Concentration:
