Biology/Chemistry

Tenure-track Full-time Position

The Departments of Biology and Chemistry at St. Olaf College invite applications for a joint appointment (2/3 biology) tenure track Molecular Biologist/Biochemist to start September 2008. The successful candidate will contribute to the departmental and interdisciplinary biomolecular science programs. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry as well as portions of our new integrated introductory chemistry/biology sequence. Applicants should demonstrate their potential for excellence in teaching in a liberal arts setting and for developing a research program amenable to including undergraduate researchers. Candidates must have earned the Ph.D., and postdoctoral research and teaching experience are highly desired. Appointment may be made at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank.  Review of completed applications will begin October 15, 2007.

The St. Olaf Biology and Chemistry Departments are in the close-knit Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FNSM).  Together, both departments graduate about 150-160 students each year with many continuing their educations in graduate or professional programs. There are 15 and 11 faculty members in the biology and chemistry departments respectively who interact through interdisciplinary programs in biomolecular science, neuroscience, environmental studies, statistics and computer science with faculty throughout the FNSM. We have a vibrant summer research program that is funded by several grants from sources including HHMI, NSF and Merck/AAAS.  Student and faculty research continues throughout the academic year often via independent research courses. We are well equipped for modern research including a LiCor DNA analysis system, a confocal microscope, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, Roche Molecular LumiImager, thermocyclers, a full range of centrifuges, freezers, uv/vis and fluorescence spectrophotometers, and chromatographic and electrophoresis tools.  Both departments have a weekly seminar program and the FNSM hosts a major science symposium focused on a particular interdisciplinary topic every spring.  A new science center, currently under construction, will be ready for occupation in fall 2008.  The molecular biologist/biochemist will have an office space and an interdisplinary research space in the new building that is in close proximity to major equipment and support spaces (autoclave, tissue culture, coldroom).

St. Olaf is located about an hour south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and an hour north of Rochester Minnesota. Many of the faculty and students take advantage of opportunities in these urban centers and at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Medical Schools.
